S534 (L641): Information Retrieval: Theory and Practice
  • The main objective of S534 is to introduce students to hands-on Information Retrieval (IR) research. Students will learn basic IR theory, examine cutting-edge IR research, and put together a research proposal that will serve as a blueprint for conducting TREC experiments.
  • In addition to learning about IR in general, students will learn how to design a research project, develop insights into how theory can be applied in practice, and gain hands-on experiences with an experimental IR system called WIDIT.
  • S534 is designed to prepare students to participate in TREC, which will involve system implementation, execution of retrieval experiments, and analysis of the experimental results.

  • The main focus of this course is on learning basic programming skills for information management on the Web. In order to do so, we will study the basics of Perl/CGI Programming with which to design and implement functional Web-based information systems.

  • The main focus of this workshop is on learning how to create dynamic and interactive Web contents by using Perl CGI scripts. Students will learn basics of CGI and Perl programming to process user input from HTML forms to create simple Web-based information management applications.
